One of the issues close to my heart is the way we bring up our daughters. It’s not that I’m not concerned with the way we bring up our sons, it’s just that there is enough self-doubt, self-hatred and criticism amongst women, that if we channeled that into some kind of energy we could solve Eskom’s electricity crisis.
How do you raise a young woman who is confident, self-assured and is proud of her achievements and qualities, all the while maintaining humility? Tough task, eh?
Last week, just before Women’s Day, I received a gift from a little birdie… The Dove #BeautyLegacy Kit. I’m going to be honest with you here, I was a little perplexed, staring at the empty Consol jar, and two pads of Post-Its! But then, like every good girl does, I read the instructions.
Did you know that 71% of girls feel pressure to be beautiful, but are less likely to let anxiety about their looks hold them back if they have a positive role model? And that 8 out of 10 women dislike at least one characteristic of their physical appearance? OK, confession time: I’m guilty of that too. What I find reassuring from their research, though, is that our daughters feel less self-conscious about their looks if they have a positive role model – that’s where we come in. I love what Dove has done with this campaign, encouraging us to pass down our #BeautyLegacy to our daughters.
So how does the #BeautyLegacy Kit work? It’s really quite simple. You, as positive role model – mom, big sister, aunt or granny – write down positive and affirmative messages on the Post-It notes, and store them in the jar to pass down to your girls. What do you wish you could tell your younger self? Write it down. What do you wish someone had told you when you were a teenager? Put that on a note for your daughter. When having a negative thought she can feel inspired by the positive messages filling up her jar. You don’t even have to put them in the jar. Stick them on her mirror for her to see first thing in the morning. Or put one in her lunchbox for her to open at break time.
Thank you Dove SA, I love the idea behind the #BeautyLegacy campaign. I’ve decided to make a positive effort to mind the way I talk about my own body, after all, the way she feels about her own beauty starts with the way I feel about mine.
I’ve written my first note, what will yours be?
